Final Project Time

It's time to start final projects.  You'll have until the last few days of school to finish them off, but get an early start as I expect to see a lot of effort put into these.

Also, you will be blogging on your progress once each week.  You will be graded these progress reports at the end.  To make it easy for me to find blog entries related to your final, please label them with the tag "final".  Just like this post.

Your first "final" blog entry should describe the project you'd like to do as approved by me.

Search Engines

This week we talked about Search Engines.  Scott Bothel from FourTen Creative was kind enough to teach us all about SEO, or Seach Engine Optimization.

Assignment:  Choose some keywords and then optimize the sample file that Scott gave us.  Upload that file and blog about the experience.

HTML and CSS

For the next few weeks we'll be looking at the languages of the web, starting with HTML and CSS.  Here are a few resources that might be some help:

For our first assignment in this section, you will be creating a Zen Garden page of your own.  Upload your zen.css file to your own student folder and then take a look at it here.

Wikis

Wiki means quick in Hawaiian.  It's a way to quickly collaborate on information and share it with the world.  This week and last we have spent working on our own wiki

Your assignment this week (due at the end of the day on Friday) is to have contributed to the wiki in several ways, including but not limited to:

• Creating an article about you and linking it in "List of Students".
• Create a new article either at "List of Topics" or "Web Applications".
• Editing and improving other people's articles.

Bonus points for having a high score on the Leaderboard 

On Friday you will blog about your experiences working with a wiki.

Other Web Applications

As we closed the section on web applications we talked about the fact that there are thousands of web applications capable of many different things.

Please create a presentation about one of these other web-based applications and present it to the class.  You may work with a partner if you wish.  Please write a blog entry about the experience and include a link to your presentation.

This Friday I'd like you to write about your experience with Aviary.  Make sure to link to at least one creation.

Online applications can make for some unique opportunities.

This week I'd like you to create a shared presentation with a group of 2 or 3 students.  Post the URL to your blog when it's all finished, and talk about the experience in that blog entry for full credit.

Internet History and Technology

Or "the Web Behind the Web"

This week we went through the History of the Internet, starting with ARPANET all the way to the IPv6 conversion due later this year.  We also discussed how the basics of the Internet work and how a web page gets from a server to your computer.  Today we finished up this section by discussing the difference between server-side and client-side scripting.

This week blog about what you learned, imagine that you're explaining it to a complete novice.  Perhaps responding to the question "What did you learn in Web Technologies class this week?".
